One-Eyed Skull - My first freehand Skull

skull_wip_doneSo I'm not a big freehand guy, mostly stencils and masks on canopies and other fun stuff... I don't do panels much either... Had some laying around and have been ithching to really broaden my skillset a bit.

Watched a video by Vince Goodeve, he painted this skull on a helmet (a much better rendition of this skull, lol)...

I started off basecoating the panel with Jacquard Halo Violet-Gold mixed with deep violet. Its a violet color with gold flakes in it, very neat base color. Clearcoated that and scuffed...

I projected onto the panel with a little projector I have and used chalk to do a basic quick trace so I could get my bearings when going in with the brush. I can't draw to save my life, so this really helped me a lot.

Spent about an hour or so on this at this point. I'm ready to go in and start hardening some lines with the white again. then on to adding some color.. its only about 25% done.

This was transparent AutoAir on Jacquard basecoat. Reduced with homebrew reducer. The panel is 10x13ish...

Like I said its my first real freehand attempt, only used a cut index card to shape the teeth, no vinyl(thats a first, lol!)

Went in and sharpened some lines, did some more detail work with white then moved on to trans blue... pushed back some shadows etc with the blue. Then Candy yellow to get the green color I was after. Back in with the same trans blue with trans black in it for a darker shade, knocked in some more shadows, and more detail. Done for tonight, I think I have about another hour or so then clear. Need to go back in with white and pull some highlights and add some more details...

Colors were Autoair transparent Blue, Black, White and Candy Yellow.

Some more work on it, I think I'm done, just have to clear it..

It was hard to get a decent photograph of it, when the daylight hits it, it really pops off, but taking a photo of it just comes out muddy..
